Snow Removal


Sidewalks – Snow should be removed within 48 hours after the snow has fallen according to Howard County Code 18.402.  Residents (including townhouse/condominium associations), whose property abut Howard County sidewalks, need to remove the snow on the sidewalk along the property line.  Sidewalks could be located at the front, side, or rear of the property.

Howard County Streets – The Bureau of Highways reminds residents to NOT park on the streets and in cul-de-sacs when snow is expected.  When a snow emergency is declared, you are prohibited to park on any snow emergency route.  Columbia Road is designated as a snow emergency route.

Columbia Association is responsible for clearing pathways which are owned by CA; Howard County will clear pathways leading to schools.  In the Dorsey Hall neighborhood, the County owns the pathways that ring the neighborhood (Gywnn Acres and Plumtree pathways).  Anything inside of the ring is most likely CA’s pathway.  Most tot lots in Dorsey Hall are CA owned tot lots.  There are no pathways in the Fairway Hills neighborhood, but you have a sidewalk on both sides of Columbia Road.

In addition to clearing sidewalks, please remember to be kind to our postal workers and fire/rescue personnel.  Shovel the snow at the cluster mailbox.  Shovel the snow around the fire hydrant.  It only takes a few minutes to clear these areas.

Decisions on Delayed Openings/Office Closings during inclement weather:
The office will post any delays or closings on the Village website and Social Media accounts (facebook, twitter) as weather and road conditions are assessed using the local news.  Besides keeping our residents safe, we need to to keep our staff safe as they travel to/from work.  We DO NOT follow the Howard County Public School System or the Howard County Government decisions.  Please remember to always visit the website before you come to visit us.  Unfortunately, our initial voicemail greeting does not give the correct operational hours.
